First Commodore and founder of the
Sequoia Yacht Club. There were 50 members with 17 boats and 3 Sea Scout ships among
the membership. Meetings were held upstairs in the Harbor Master's building.
"Doc" was an avid "Snipe" sailor. Sequoia Y.C. joined
PICYA. The first inter-club regatta was held with Palo Alto YC and South Bay YC
participating. |

Gustav R. Barth * |

The first installation dinner in November
1939 installed Gustav Barth to be the second Commodore. In 1940, the membership
listed 30 sailboats and 16 motorboats. The "Snipe" class sailboat
continues to be the popular sailboat in the club. Commodore Barth representing
Sequoia YC to PICYA is elected their Commodore for 1943 and 1944. |

consists of 31 sailboats and 18 motorboats. |
| 1942 |
H. C. Armitage * |
 |
A charter member Commodore Armitage is
installed in November 1941. World War II starts in December. Membership in
1942 lists 23 sailboats and 6 motor boats. Comm. Armitage's enthusiasm holds the
club together. Later, the "Armitage" Award is established to honor those
for service to the youth in our Club. |

Rationing is in effect. Members
participate in the war efforts. There were 25 sailboats and 6 motorboats listed in
the yearbook. Sequoia, Palo Alto, South Bay and Coyote Pt. Yacht Clubs publish their
events, announcements and news in a single publication to save paper. The
Ladies Auxiliary is formed. |

Fred Smales

An avid sailor, Fred Smales, moves up
from Southern California, joins Sequoia YC and becomes commodore in 1944. He returns
to southern California and becomes deeply envolved in the Southern California boating
community. He seerves as commodore and president of several yacht clubs and
associations. He did a stint on an America's Cup contender. Now living in
Kanoehe, Hawaii. He is an honorary member and the Senior Past Commodore. |

Cutler L. Brown *

The club publishes the first monthly club newsletter
called the "Mainsheet." Sequoia YC joins the Yacht Racing Association of
San Francisco. In July, the Club goes on their river cruise. The War ends. |
