The Original Nauti-Girls

Have you ever wandered into the club on a Tuesday night, and see a group of people playing cards in the corner? Or see in the Club Calendar “Card Night” on Tuesday nights? Do you ever say to yourself, “That looks interesting. I wonder who they are and what they are playing?”

Card Night was started by past Women’s Auxiliary President, Zona Caesar, who still drops in on Card Night whenever she’s in town. On this one evening a week, members gather for a shared meal, a friendly game of Progressive (Contract) Rummy, conversation, and some rolicking good time.

So, just who are these card players? The past and current players range in ages from early teens to, well, we’d rather not say. It’s just not polite to mention age. They have an average membership seniority of 10 years with Sequoia Yacht Club, and have held a variety of positions at SYC, both formal and informal. Amongst the players, they have been club directors, treasurers, secretaries, port captains, social chairs, spouses of past commodores, junior sailing instructor, women’s auxiliary presidents, and have hosted numerous events at the club. Roberta Barnes even started a previous incarnation of Nauti-Girls when she started a series of on-the-water safety programs geared toward the women members in the yacht club. Talk about a mind trust of SYC history!

Commodore's November Scope Article

We've had a great year at the club and I've really enjoyed the privilege of serving as commodore.  The support and encouragement of our membership has been outstanding, especially all the great volunteers who have served the past year to help keep our club running smoothly.  I'd particularly like to thank the other commodores, Petra Gilmore, Byron Jacobs and Mike Harris; Joseph Curtis as Port Captain; Sherry Warburton as Secretary our directors Peter Blackmore, George Carr, Alex Huang, Dennis Lowe, Jim Peterson and Fred Wydler; Joanne Wright for all the bookkeeping, Marc Cohen as treasurer; Jerry Jones and Ed Copeland for membership, Ann McDonough and Sherry Warburton for the great new website; Deb Blackmore, Sheila Jones and Isabelle Copeland for the Scope; Bob Stanfield for engraving; Ann and Deb - our Nauti Girls; Kathy Harris for haberdasher; Rick Gilmore for Beercans/Redwood Cup; John Draeger as Sailboat Fleet Captain; Ron Stingley for Cruising, Sheila Jones for Power Fleet,

Welcome to the new SYC website!

It took us a while, but I think the dust has finally settled.  Thank you all for your patience while Sherry and I built the new club website.  It's far from perfect, but we hope that this format will allow us to keep the site more relevant to you.

Come on in.  Take a tour, poke around, and let us know what you think. What will make this site useful to you?  What do you like?  What doesn't work?

We do have a Phase 2 planned. We would like your inputs in what our priorities are for Phase 2. Depending on the amount of work, we may plan a Phase 3.

Yes, we are keeping the old site around for a while, just in case. If you find something from the old site that is missing in the new site, please drop us a note or try the new comment feature below. (You must be logged in before you can post comments. Look in your email for more information.)

Crew Overboard Training

We had a great turn out last weekend for our Crew Overboard Training.  Captain Mary SwiftSwan, along with her crew of instructors and the crew volunteers from Wallin's Dive Center, came out to give about 20 Sequoia Yacht Club members some hands-on training on how to retrieve crew from the bay.

We want to thank the Blackmores, Graves, Petersons, and the Webers for letting us use their boats for the exercises, and Chef Steve for providing a hearty English Breakfast before the class.  And a special thank you goes out to Steve Holmstrom and Steve Higgs for volunteering to be 2 of our "victims."  They braved the cold bay water for over 4 hours as we took turns at the helm and at the rescue positions.

We received the following note from Steve Higgs, describing the event from the victim's perspective.

Thoughts from the other end of the MOB course.

On Saturday I met Deb Blackmore for Breakfast at the Club, I had already volunteered to assist in the MOB drills that were being run on the evening before & all day Saturday.

It was a little like the condemned mans last meal, full English Breakfast & a big mug of Tea, all I needed was the BBC on the Radio & a copy of the local paper & I was going to be set for the day!!,
