South Bay Championship 2009

The Sequoia Yacht Club hosted the annual South Bay Championship on Saturday, October 17, 2009.  Seven boats came out to the start line with a beginning of an ebb tide and light winds predicted.   Alex Huang kindly volunteered to manage the race committee on Ted Hannig's catamaran, Seascapades along with Winston Bumpus taking all of the finish times.  Our start and finish line was out at Mark S.

The first race was postponed for 30 minutes due to light winds.  The race started at 1pm on a 6.47 nm course (S/f - Xp- 12p- Yp- s/F).  At the start, we had winds about 5-7kts from the NW.  The first place finisher was Henry Kleinberg, Primordial Sloop followed closely by Stan Phillips, Smokin' J.

The second race started at 14:55 with about 15kts of wind and building from WNW with a strong ebb current.  The Race Committe selected an 8.87 nm course (S/f- Bs- Xs- 12p- Yp- s/F).   Everyone's challenge was first to find Mark X (a new pole buoy that was about 12 inches above water) and second to fly and gibe their chutes in 23 kts of wind.  First place finisher was Jim Peterson, MADE Easy, followed closely by Stan Phillips, Smokin' J.

This is a two race series with both races counted towards the cup.  First Place honors goes to Stan Phillips, Smokin' J.  Second Place goes to Jim Peterson, MADE Easy.  Full race results can be found in the spreadsheet below.

South Bay Championship 2008

On Saturday, October 25, summer replaced fall for one more day making for a hot South Bay Championship. Nine spinnaker division entries including new A-sym fliers Mark Millet’s Slipstream and Petra and Rick Gilmore’s Mirth, and 3 non-spinnaker entries made it to the line for the two race day. Joining SYC from Coyote Point was Larry Westland’s Wired. Ugly SailFlow predictions of variable E to NW and 0 to 7 knots fortunately were on the light side, as the breeze stayed consistently North and mostly between 4 and 8k. It was interesting to see the pressure at mast height with almost nothing on the surface. Just before start one, the wind and current gods conspired against the Race Committee boat Yellow Brick Roadby stretching the anchor rode a long distance in the shallow water, directly down the start line! RC, therefore postponed and reset stern to the wind, eventually dropping the postponement flag for a 12:50 start. Spinnaker boats set up well for a tight battle in the first start. In the non-spinnaker division, a combination of unheard horns and radios gave John Graves’ Metridium a wide open start line with no competing boats in sight. Finishes were notably consistent in both races. Charlie Watt’s new Antrim 27, Head Rush loved the light air and flat water finishing with two bullets and the trophy.  Henry Kleinberg’s Primordial Sloop and a smokin’ Smokin J (which could not have been smokin’) tied for second. In non-spinnaker, John Grave’s Metridium tied with Dan Doud’s Timbuktu. By tie breaker rules, Metridium gets second and Smokin J gets third. John and Monica Graves jumped in the water. The Race Committee ate sushi.
