The First Annual Westpoint Marina Regatta 2009
Race Results
Exciting and Competitive.
These two words understate the reality of the Inaugural WestPoint Harbor Regatta.
When boats like the great Kokopelli II show up on your starting line you know you are in for a treat.
The race was a testament to the NCPHRF system. After 25 nautical miles, the corrected time gap between the first five finishers in both fleets was less than 25 minutes.
The day started with the crew of Black Sheep serving as committee boat and then weighing anchor and jumping into the fight.
Kokopelli II led the fleet around Alcatraz in winds of 5 to ten knots.
The real action started between the Bay Bridge and San Mateo Bridge where San Francisco sailing conditions jumped into the mix.
The fleet split into three strategies. Independence led a group hugging Oakland airport while others played with the western shore. We even had a group with big kahones making love with the San Bruno Shoal.
The lead changed hands at least six times. At one point in the middle of the race Joyicity, Mirth, Pursuit , Espresso, Made Easy and Black Sheep created a scene that looked like a start line.
Head Rush and Kokopelli II disappeared into the haze ahead of the fleet.
Fancy, Iowa, Northern Lights and Hot Ice had a big duel in the non-spinnaker fleet.
Killing Time gets kudos for having difficulties before the start, but completing the course anyway.
A great time was had by all. Next year’s race will be early in the season so be sure to check the YRA calendar. We will be adding live music.
One day we hope to rival the Jazz Cup and Vallejo races.

Will see you at the South Beach Friday night Series
Sequoia Yacht Club is hosting the first annual Westpoint Marina Regatta on Saturday, April 18, 2009.
The Race will start off the NE end of Yerba Buena Island, take Alcatraz to port, and then finish at the Redwood Creek entry buoys #3 and #4; for a total distance of 25 nm. What, you can have a long distance race in San Francisco Bay? We should have our spring winds which means you will have a great run down the bay. Unfortunately, you just can't sail anywhere, the South Bay has a number of very shallow shoals- so check your 'up to date' charts and make sure your depth finder works well!
Once you finish the course, you will find the South Bay hospitality at it's best! There will be free berthing at the new Westpoint Marina. Once you are tied up, there will be transportation provided to Sequoia Yacht Club. SYC will be putting on it's famous 'Tri-tip steak' dinner for $20 per person. Also, SYC will provide breakfast at 8:30am on Sunday.
To enter the race, please fill out the Skipper's Entry form attached below. Besides your signature, we need your PHRF rating, and whether you will be Spinnaker or Non-Spinnaker division. Please send your signed entry form and the $20 entry fee to Sequoia Yacht Club. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sequoia Yacht Club.
