Sequoia Yacht Club Paddle Fleet Activities List:

NEXT EVENT: (~Late October TBD)

Join our next event! 16,000 mile paddling adventure together with "Enchanted Vagabonds"

Ahoy paddlers.

Shhhhh... can you hear that? Take a look outside. Do you feel that?

The weather this week is bringing a slight chill over the westward hills. My kayak (she lives on the bow of my 22' sailboat) sways in the breeze at Bair Island Marina and is waiting anxiously to dip into the water again. Soon it will be too cold for regular Paddle Fleet outings and we begin to turn our attentions towards the wintery season of long-awaited boat projects - wearing sweaters and socks.

Watching the seasons begin to change is a beautiful thing but can be quite imperceptible on our beautiful and mild Peninsula. Those who spend time on the water regularly are astute to the extremely minor changes in wind and temperature - we look, feel, smell, hear and listen to the environment. We watch the wind. We prepare for all weather conditions.

Which means... I'm proposing a one-time Paddle Fleet Book Club! We can meet in late October near the light of the club's warm fireplace, sip and share wine and talk about the adventures from our wild 1930's 16,000 mile paddling newlyweds.

If you are interested, please purchase a copy of the book and begin reading. We will meet between Oct 18 - Oct 30th (TBD) at the club to discuss the book together.

Fair winds and warm sweaters,

Olivia White
Paddle Fleet Captain

Book: Enchanted Vagabonds by Dana Lamb (Amazon link here)

Description: Dana and Ginger Lamb had no motive but adventure when they left California in the autumn of 1933 and headed south in a 16-foot vessel they had built themselves. How else would you explain setting off on a 16,000 mile voyage? However the romantic young explorers did possess the Vagabunda, a frail combination of sailboat and canoe. Not wanting to overload themselves the young newlyweds also brought along a minimum of equipment and, as an afterthought, less than five dollars between them. What followed was the one of the greatest adventure travel tales ever to emerge from the action-packed 1930s. The Lambs shot through mountainous surf, landed on fabled islands, lived through violent storms, weathered nearly a dozen fatal wrecks, were upset in a traffic jam of whales, caught in quicksand, trapped inside an extinct volcano, and lost in a shark-infested lagoon. Then, armed with only their wits and an old machete, they survived malaria, fought off Indians, cut their way through a jungle, and avoided flesh-eating insects, all in the name of love and adventure. "Enchanted Vagabonds" is thus the action-packed true story of their amazing combination of courage, love, and endurance. Filled with photographs taken on their historic trip, the book is a non-stop thrill from start to finish.

Presenters: Kelly Marie Henry and Emily Matthews

Kelly Marie Henry first paddled a sea kayak in her hometown waters of Narragansett Bay Rhode Island and immediately fell in love with the freedom kayaking provides to explore coastal regions seldom traveled by others. After completing a Master’s and Doctorate in oceanography, she realized the best way to share her passion for the water was through paddlesports. In 2013, Kelly left a promising career in science behind to work full-time in paddlesports. She instructs introductory and intermediate level courses through California Canoe & Kayak and offers advanced level instruction and long-term paddler development programs through River & Ocean. Kelly is a dynamic paddler committed to pushing her limits and improving her technique. As a coach, she strives to help paddlers of all abilities find joy on the water.

Be sure to look for Kelly as she continues to compete in west coast surf kayak events in pursuit of a spot on the 2017 U.S. West Surf Kayak Team.  And check out her upcoming sea kayak adventure, Fearless Formosa, a 6-week sea kayak expedition in Taiwan.

Kelly is an ACA Level 4 Open Water Coastal Kayak Instructor, Level 3 Surf Kayak Instructor, and a Level 2 SUP Instructor, and trained in Wilderness First Aid.

Emily Matthews will be a special guest presenter to discuss SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboard) questions and techniques. Ms. Matthews is an experienced SUP paddler currently training for the Yukon River Quest!
