Coastal Cleanup

Date:
Saturday, September 21, 2019 - 09:00

What's the secret to losing 2 lbs a day? Come and volunteer for Coastal Cleanup Day! Since 2015, SYC volunteers removed about 3,650 lbs of trash and recyclables from the waterways around SYC over the past 4 years.

CALL FOR SYC Members and Guests to VOLUNTEER. JOIN US to remove trash from our Port of Redwood City shoreline and participate in this one-day, statewide event for two hours only. We need you! To volunteer, please RSVP here – Online Registration   (We will provide food and tools for volunteers).

This is SYC's 9th year participating in this annual volunteer activity and we are very proud of our membership's continued commitment to community service. If you haven't participated in previous years, you might say "Hmm I don't really see any trash along the shore" but

·  In 2015, some 40 Sequoia Yacht Club volunteers collected 750 lbs of trash and about 200lbs of recyclables along the shore (from the boat launch ramp around to the fishing pier).

·  In 2016, total trash collected was 1,305 lbs and 165 lbs of recyclables by 56 volunteers (including the population from the Sea Scouts organization at the north/eastern side of the channel).

·  In 2017 over 60 SYC volunteers collected over 500 lbs of trash and about 50 lbs of recyclables

·  In 2018 total trash pickup was 478 lbs of trash and 139 lbs of recyclables with over 50 volunteers

·  By volume, 2016 was the largest trash pick-up in the past 6 years of Coastal Cleanup Day at SYC.

VOLUNTEERS

On Saturday 9/21 starting at 9am there will be donuts, coffee, and plenty of water to start you off; then stick around after the cleanup as we will have a pizza lunch together and present awards. Always fun. We will also be honored to have Vivian Matuk (Environmental Boating Program Coordinator, California State Parks Division of Boating & Waterways, California Coastal Commission) on hand again this year to help kick off the event.

Sequoia Yacht Club leads the way among CA Yacht Clubs

Your Sequoia Yacht Club is now known throughout the state for leading pioneering efforts, together with the State of California Division of Boating and Waterways Coastal Commission, to encourage other yacht clubs to participate in this terrific statewide program since we ran a pilot program to see how yacht clubs could engage in Coastal Cleanup Day. See the video here:  SYC Coastal Cleanup Video

We love our clean waterways!

We love the future of our very beloved community of Redwood City and its future generations.

COME AND VOLUNTEER!
