Youth Sailing Camps

The Sequoia Yacht Club Youth Sailing Camp is an annual series of events with the aim to instill a love for sailing and the outdoors for those 10 to 15 years old.

Each camp is one week long, Monday through Thursday. Camps are during the summer vacation period. For 2022 the camp dates are:

Camp #1: Wk 26, June 27-30

Camp #2: Wk 28, July 11-14

Camp #3: Wk 29, July 18-21

Camp #4: Wk 30, July 25-28

Camp #5: Wk 31, Aug 1-4

Camps run each day from 9 AM to 3 PM, Monday through Thursday.

Camps take place in the Port of Redwood City at the recreational end where the water is protected and calm, and the marina and the Sequoia Yacht Club are located.

During camp, each student has access to an El Toro sailboat with which they practice. Emphasis is on safety-conscious fun sailing, considering weather, tides, marine traffic, etc. Participants learn elements of seamanship such as knots and equipment care, boat terminology, rigging, boat handling, proper upwind sailing, tacking, downwind sailing, jibing, boat speed, racing tactics, sportsmanship, and the rules of racing. It is encouraged that students attend multiple weeks of camp. This will deepen the learning of sailing, and expose the student to a broader understanding of boating aspects. Participants receive the US Sailing "Learn Sailing Right Beginning Sailing" book and the 'little red' certification record book, a life long memory of great adventures and a love for sailing.

At the completion of a weeklong session, camp participants will know how to independently set up a sailing dinghy, sail a specific course, and practice safe seamanship in an environment that emphasizes the joy of sailing.

Parent participation in the camp is encouraged, and the Sequoia Yacht Club welcomes participants and their parents/guardians at their premises. This year we are introducing Work-from-Club (WfC) option, where parents can enjoy the Sequoia Yacht Club premises while continuing to work. We offer a view over the marina, fast wifi, and a quiet environment.
